What is w3?

Can someone explain what is w3 in simple terms? I’ve seen it mentioned in payroll and tax documents but don’t fully understand its purpose. How is it used by employers during tax filing?

W-3, or Form W-3, is a summary tax form employers send to the Social Security Administration. It reports total wages, tips, and taxes withheld for all employees, matching the individual W-2 forms. Employers submit it annually to ensure accurate reporting of payroll information and employee earnings.

It's a summary form employers send to the Social Security Administration once a year, it basically totals up all the wages and taxes from every employee's W-2, just so everything matches up on the government's end.

A W-3 form (Transmittal of Wage and Tax Statements) is a summary form that employers send to the Social Security Administration along with all their employees’ W-2 forms. It totals up wages, Social Security, and Medicare taxes reported for the year. Unlike a W-2, which goes to each employee, the W-3 is only used by the employer to report combined payroll information to the government.
