What is unlimited PTO and how does it work?

I’ve seen companies offering unlimited PTO, but how does it actually work in practice? Do employees really take more leave or less? Are there hidden policies or expectations? Would love to hear experiences.
 
Unlimited PTO (paid time off) means there’s no fixed number of vacation days; you can take time off when you need it, as long as your work is handled and your manager approves it. In practice, it’s less “unlimited” than it sounds because you’re still expected to meet deadlines and not disrupt the team, so people usually take a reasonable amount rather than going overboard. I’ve seen that it works well in flexible, trust-based workplaces, but in some cases, people actually end up taking less time off since there’s no clear number to aim for.
 
Unlimited PTO (Paid Time Off) is a flexible workplace policy that 'lets' employees take their vacation, personal days, or any other time off as and when they want, instead of getting a predetermined number of leave days. Here generally the employees ask the managers for the time off and the granted time off depends on the workload, team coverage and company policies. The approach was made popular by the Netflix-style flexible workplaces. One of the key features of unlimited PTO is that it will facilitate the work-life balance and establish a culture of trust with the employees. However, it is implicit that employees do not slack off, that they still meet deadlines, maintain performance and coordinate their absences with their team responsibly.
