What is the semi monthly meaning in payroll — and how is it different from biweekly?

I need a simple explanation of semi monthly meaning before we communicate a pay schedule change to our team. I know it's twice a month — but how does it differ from biweekly in terms of total paychecks per year and how holiday dates are handled?

Semi-monthly payroll means employees are paid twice a month, usually on fixed dates like the 15th and last day of the month, so you typically get 24 paychecks a year. Biweekly payroll is different because you’re paid every 2 weeks, which results in 26 paychecks a year. I’ve noticed biweekly checks feel more consistent since they come on the same weekday, while semi-monthly can vary depending on weekends and the month length.

Semi-monthly payroll means employees are paid twice each month, usually on fixed dates such as the 15th and the last day of the month, resulting in 24 pay periods per year.

In contrast, biweekly payroll pays employees every two weeks, typically on the same weekday (like every other Friday), which results in 26 pay periods per year. The key difference is that semi-monthly follows specific calendar dates, while biweekly follows a 14-day schedule.

When its mentioned that payroll is paid on a “semi monthly” basis, it is referring to having payroll paid twice every month, typically on dates such as the 15th and 30th. Biweekly payroll refers to a system that pays employees every other week, or 26 times a year instead of 24. Many employees are paid on a semi-monthly basis, and some are paid on a biweekly basis.
