What Is a Hiring Manager – How Are They Different From HR?

I often see the term hiring manager in job postings but I'm confused about their exact role. Is a hiring manager the same as an HR person or are they different? Can someone explain what a hiring manager actually does?

A hiring manager is the person in a company who has a job opening on their team and is responsible for choosing the best candidate for that role. They decide what skills and experience are needed, conduct interviews, and make the final hiring decision. HR (Human Resources), on the other hand, manages the overall hiring process and employee policies. HR posts job ads, screens resumes, schedules interviews, and ensures the hiring process follows company rules and legal guidelines.

A hiring manager is the person who actually needs the employee and makes the final call, while HR handles the process like posting jobs, screening resumes, and coordinating interviews. Think of HR as the organizer and the hiring manager as the decision-maker for the team.

A hiring manager is the person responsible for filling a specific job opening and usually becomes the new employee's supervisor. While HR manages the recruitment process, policies, and paperwork, the hiring manager evaluates candidates' skills, conducts interviews, and makes the final hiring decision.

A hiring manager is the individual who is tasked with filling a particular job position in their team. They outline the criteria for a job, conduct applicant interviews, and hire the candidate. HR, in contrast, is involved in recruitment processes, compliance, onboarding, and employee policies. HR helps in hiring, and the hiring manager selects the candidate.
