What is a hiring manager and what do they do in the recruitment process?

I’m trying to understand the role of a hiring manager in a company. I know they are involved in recruitment, but I’m not clear on how their responsibilities differ from HR. Can someone explain what a hiring manager does and how they are involved in selecting candidates?

A hiring manager is the person (usually your future boss) who actually needs someone for a role and makes the final call on who gets hired; they define the job requirements, work with HR to post the role, review shortlisted resumes, take interviews, and decide which candidate fits the team best. From what I’ve seen, HR handles the process, but the hiring manager focuses more on whether you can actually do the job and fit into the team.

A hiring manager is essentially the person responsible for finding and selecting the best candidate for a specific job opening within their team or department. They're usually the ones who initiate the recruitment process by identifying the need for a new hire and defining the job requirements. During the recruitment process, they work closely with HR to create job postings, review resumes, and conduct interviews. The hiring manager's role is more focused on the technical aspects of the job and finding the right fit for their team, whereas HR handles the administrative tasks and ensures the process is fair and compliant with company policies. The hiring manager typically makes the final decision on who to hire, based on their assessments of the candidates' skills and fit for the role.
