How many hours per week is officially considered part time?

I've been offered a part-time position but the offer letter doesn't specify a minimum number of hours. Is there a legal or standard definition for part-time hours? Does it vary by country, industry, or employer? How does it affect benefits eligibility?

There’s no single universal rule, but part-time work is generally considered anything under 35–40 hours per week. In many companies, employees working less than 30–35 hours weekly are classified as part-time, while 40 hours is typically full-time. The exact cutoff depends on the employer and local labor laws, so it can vary by company or country.

Part-time hours are not the same everywhere and can vary greatly depending on the location and the employer. Typically, part-time work involves fewer hours than 35-40 hours a week. Some employers, especially those in the U. S. use 30 hours a week as a cutoff for providing benefits to employees and so anything less than 30 hours a week is part-time for many of them. There are companies which consider part-time as the working hours being between 20 and 30 hours whereas there are other companies which consider anything below full-time i. e. 40 hours as part time. The exact definition will depend on the policy of the company, the local labor laws and which benefits an employee is eligible for e. g. heath insurance, paid leave or overtime. Make sure to check the specific ones with your employer.

Part-time work is generally considered less than 35–40 hours per week, depending on the country and employer. In many places, anything under 30–35 hours is clearly part-time. There is no single global standard, so definitions vary based on labor laws, company policies, and industry practices.

There's no one universal number but generally anything under 35 to 40 hours is considered part time, and in the US a lot of companies use 30 hours as the cutoff for benefits eligibility, worth clarifying with your employer directly though.
