What is withheld?

Can someone explain what is withheld from a paycheck? I want to understand what deductions are typically included. How can employees check these deductions?

Withheld just means the money taken out of your paycheck before you get it, things like federal and state taxes, Social Security, Medicare, and sometimes health insurance or retirement contributions, you can check your pay stub to see the full breakdown.

Withheld means something is kept back or not given immediately. In finance or payroll, it usually refers to money—such as taxes—taken from an employee’s paycheck by an employer and sent to the government on the employee’s behalf.

When you get your paycheck, you might notice that the amount you take home is less than what you actually earned, and that's because some money is withheld. Typically, this includes taxes like federal and state income tax, as well as other deductions like social security and Medicare taxes. You might also see deductions for health insurance, retirement plans, or other benefits. To check these deductions, you can look at your pay stub, which should break down all the withholdings and deductions. You can also talk to your HR department or payroll person to get a better understanding of what's being withheld and why.
