What is the difference between leave and absent in attendance management?

I am confused about leave and absent status in HR systems. Can someone explain how leave and absent are recorded and whether leave and absent affect salary differently?

The primary difference between leave and absence in attendance management is authorization. Leave is an approved, scheduled, or sanctioned time away from work (e.g., vacation, sick leave), while absence is an unapproved or unexpected time away (e.g., absenteeism, "no-call, no-show"). Leave is typically paid or part of a benefit plan, whereas absence is often unpaid.

In attendance management, leave means an employee has officially requested and received approval to take time off from work. Absent means the employee did not show up for work without prior approval or notice. Leave is planned and recorded, while absence may require explanation or disciplinary action.

In attendance management, “leave” usually means an employee or student has officially requested and received approval for time away from work or classes. “Absent” means the person was missing without approved leave or proper notice. Leave may include vacation, sick leave, or personal leave, while absence can affect attendance records, salary, or performance tracking. Organizations often use attendance systems to separate approved leave from unapproved absences for accurate reporting and payroll calculations.
