What is bereavement leave and how does it work in companies?

I want to understand bereavement leave policy in companies. How many days are usually provided and who is eligible for it? Please share your company experience or HR guidance regarding this leave type.

I've had experience with bereavement leave in my previous company, and typically it's a short-term leave provided to employees who have lost a close family member. The number of days can vary, but usually, it's around 3 to 5 days, depending on the company's policy and the employee's relationship with the deceased. In my company, employees were eligible for bereavement leave if they lost a spouse, child, parent, or sibling. The HR department would require some documentation, such as a death certificate or obituary notice, to verify the claim. The leave was paid, and employees could take it immediately after notifying their manager and HR. It's worth noting that some companies may have more generous policies, so it's always best to check with your HR department for specific details.

Bereavement leave is time off that companies give employees after the death of a close family member or loved one. In most companies, it’s a paid leave for a few days so the person can attend funerals, handle family matters, or simply grieve. The exact rules depend on the company policy, like who qualifies as family and how many days are allowed. In my experience, some workplaces are very flexible during these situations, while others follow a strict HR policy.
