I noticed absent on leave status in our HR software. Can someone explain when absent on leave is used and whether absent on leave affects payroll or leave balance?

"Absent on leave" in attendance reports means an employee is away from work during scheduled hours with prior approval or authorized status. Unlike unauthorized absence (AWOL), this status indicates planned or approved time off, such as paid leave, sick leave with medical documentation, or maternity/paternity leave.

In attendance reports, absent on leave means an employee did not attend work because they were officially on approved leave. It indicates the employee was away from work, but the absence was authorized and recorded as leave, not an unapproved absence.

“Absent on leave” in attendance reports usually means a person was not present but had approved leave recorded in the system. This status helps distinguish authorized leave from unapproved absences. Companies and schools use it to maintain accurate attendance tracking, payroll calculations, and leave balances. Depending on organization policies, absent-on-leave entries may count differently from unpaid absences when calculating salary, attendance percentages, or performance records in attendance management systems.
