What are wages in lieu of notice?

I would like to understand how wages in lieu of notice work when an employee leaves a job without serving the notice period. How is this amount calculated, and is it a standard practice across all companies or dependent on individual policies?

Wages in lieu of notice are payments made by an employer to an employee instead of requiring them to work during the notice period after termination or resignation. This compensation covers the salary the employee would have earned if they had worked through the notice period.

Wages in lieu of notice are payments an employer gives instead of making you work during your notice period after termination or resignation. For example, if your contract says you must give or receive 30 days’ notice, the employer may choose to end employment immediately and pay you the salary for those 30 days instead. I’ve seen this mostly happen when companies want a quick exit without having the employee continue working.
